Area and Perimeter Worksheets
Page one has rectangles on a grid, so students count square units for area and count edges for perimeter. Page two has labeled rectangles for using length × width and adding the sides. Page three covers the perimeter of polygons (triangles, trapezoids, a regular pentagon and an L-shape) and finding a missing side when the perimeter is known.

Area and Perimeter: Count the Squares
Area is the number of square units inside a shape. Perimeter is the distance around it. Each square is 1 unit on each side.

Area and Perimeter: Use the Side Lengths
Area of a rectangle = length × width. Perimeter = add all four sides.

Perimeter of Polygons
Find the perimeter of each shape: add the lengths of all its sides. Shapes are not drawn to scale.
Perimeter = cm
Perimeter = in
Regular pentagon (5 equal sides). Perimeter = m
Perimeter = ft
The perimeter is 32 cm. The missing side is cm.
The perimeter is 25 in. The missing side is in.

Perimeter of Polygons: Answer Key
Find the perimeter of each shape: add the lengths of all its sides. Shapes are not drawn to scale.
Perimeter = 31 cm
Perimeter = 28 in
Regular pentagon (5 equal sides). Perimeter = 10 m
Perimeter = 34 ft
The perimeter is 32 cm. The missing side is 6 cm.
The perimeter is 25 in. The missing side is 4 in.
Teaching tips
- Area is measured in square units; perimeter is measured in units.
- Common Core 3.MD.C.6 and 3.MD.C.7.B cover measuring area by counting squares and by multiplying side lengths, and 3.MD.D.8 covers perimeters of polygons, including finding an unknown side length.
- Have students check area on the grid by multiplying rows × columns.
