Area Model Multiplication Worksheets
Page one gives the area model with each number broken into expanded form. Students multiply to fill each box and add the partial products. Page two asks students to draw their own area models.

Area Model Multiplication
Multiply to fill in each box. Then add the boxes to find the product. Example: 23 × 4 → 20 × 4 = 80 and 3 × 4 = 12, so 80 + 12 = 92.

Area Model Multiplication: Draw Your Own
Break each number into expanded form. Draw an area model, fill in each box and add to find the product.
1) 27 × 6
2) 58 × 8
3) 93 × 8
4) 46 × 5
Area Model Multiplication: Answer Key
Multiply to fill in each box. Then add the boxes to find the product. Example: 23 × 4 → 20 × 4 = 80 and 3 × 4 = 12, so 80 + 12 = 92.
1) 44 × 3
| 40 | 4 | |
| 3 | 120 | 12 |
Add: 120 + 12 = 132
2) 75 × 7
| 70 | 5 | |
| 7 | 490 | 35 |
Add: 490 + 35 = 525
3) 64 × 5
| 60 | 4 | |
| 5 | 300 | 20 |
Add: 300 + 20 = 320
4) 54 × 5
| 50 | 4 | |
| 5 | 250 | 20 |
Add: 250 + 20 = 270
Area Model Multiplication: Draw Your Own: Answer Key
Break each number into expanded form. Draw an area model, fill in each box and add to find the product.
1) 27 × 6
| 20 | 7 | |
| 6 | 120 | 42 |
120 + 42 = 162
2) 58 × 8
| 50 | 8 | |
| 8 | 400 | 64 |
400 + 64 = 464
3) 93 × 8
| 90 | 3 | |
| 8 | 720 | 24 |
720 + 24 = 744
4) 46 × 5
| 40 | 6 | |
| 5 | 200 | 30 |
200 + 30 = 230
Teaching tips
- Common Core 4.NBT.B.5 asks students to multiply up to four digits by one digit, and two 2-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and to explain the calculation with equations, arrays and area models.
- Have students estimate first (38 × 6 is about 40 × 6 = 240) to check the final answer.
- Connect each box to the partial products in the standard algorithm.
