CVC Words Worksheets
CVC words are three-letter words with a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, like cat, pen, pig, hot and bug. They are usually the first words children learn to sound out.
Pick one short vowel or mix them all. Each set has four pages (missing vowel and word families; a vowel sort and real-or-nonsense words; picture spelling; and read-and-match with picture word choices) plus answer keys.
CVC Words: Missing Vowel
Write a vowel (a, e, i, o or u) to make a real word. If there is a picture, spell the picture. Without a picture, some have more than one answer!
Word families: write a word for each beginning sound.
-en
-ed
-in
CVC Words: Sort and Read
Read each word. Write it under its short vowel sound.
tub • red • lot • log • van • mug • fan • hog • hip • dot • map • hug • big • bun • tap
short a
short e
short i
short o
short u
Real or nonsense? Read each word. Color the real words. Put an X on the nonsense words.
CVC Words: Picture Spelling
Say the name of each picture. Stretch out the sounds. Write one letter in each box.
CVC Words: Read and Match
Read each word. Draw a line from the picture to its word.
Look at the picture. Circle the word that names it.

Teaching tips
- Have students tap each sound with a finger, then sweep to blend: /c/ /a/ /t/, cat.
- Teach one word family (-at, -ig, -op) at a time before mixing vowels.
- Nonsense words check true decoding, because students cannot guess them from memory.
