2D and 3D Shapes Worksheets
These shapes worksheets cover flat 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, hexagon and more) and solid 3D shapes (cube, sphere, cone, cylinder, pyramid and rectangular prism).
There are three pages: name the shape plus sides and vertices, color by shape plus 2D or 3D sorting, and faces, edges and vertices of 3D shapes. Answer keys follow.
2D Shapes: Name the Shape
Word bank: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval, hexagon. Write the name of each shape.
Count the sides and vertices (corners).
| Shape | Name | Sides | Vertices |
|---|---|---|---|
| triangle | |||
| square | |||
| rectangle | |||
| hexagon |
Shapes: Color by Shape and 2D or 3D
Color by shape: circle = red, triangle = blue, square = green, rectangle = yellow, hexagon = orange.
Is it flat (2D) or solid (3D)? Write 2D or 3D under each shape. Name the 3D shapes you know.
3D Shapes: Faces, Edges and Vertices
Look at each solid shape. Count its flat faces, edges and vertices. (Tip: a real block helps!)
| Shape | Name | Flat faces | Edges | Vertices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| cube | ||||
| sphere | ||||
| cone | ||||
| cylinder | ||||
| square pyramid | ||||
| rectangular prism |
2D Shapes: Name the Shape
Word bank: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval, hexagon. Write the name of each shape.
Count the sides and vertices (corners).
| Shape | Name | Sides | Vertices |
|---|---|---|---|
| triangle | 3 | 3 | |
| square | 4 | 4 | |
| rectangle | 4 | 4 | |
| hexagon | 6 | 6 |
Shapes: Color by Shape and 2D or 3D
Color by shape: circle = red, triangle = blue, square = green, rectangle = yellow, hexagon = orange.

3D Shapes: Faces, Edges and Vertices
Look at each solid shape. Count its flat faces, edges and vertices. (Tip: a real block helps!)
| Shape | Name | Flat faces | Edges | Vertices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| cube | 6 | 12 | 8 | |
| sphere | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
| cone | 1 | 0 | 1 | |
| cylinder | 2 | 0 | 0 | |
| square pyramid | 5 | 8 | 5 | |
| rectangular prism | 6 | 12 | 8 |
Note: cones and cylinders have curved edges where a flat face meets the curved surface. Some programs count them (cone 1, cylinder 2). Here we count only straight edges, and the tip of a cone as 1 vertex.
Teaching tips
- Go on a shape hunt around the classroom before the worksheets.
- A square is a special rectangle: it has four square corners and four equal sides.
- Let students hold real blocks when counting faces, edges and vertices.
- Common Core K.G.A.2 asks students to name shapes regardless of their size or which way they are turned.
