Vowel Teams Worksheets
Page one has ten words to read, circle the vowel team and write, plus a word sort. Page two has eight sentences where students pick the vowel team that spells the missing word, like r__n with ai or ay.
Choose “Mixed” for all eight vowel teams, where students sort words by long vowel sound, or pick one sound (such as long A: ai and ay) to sort by spelling. Press “New worksheet” for a new set.

Teaching tips
- Common Core RF.1.3.c asks students to know final -e and common vowel team conventions for long vowel sounds, and RF.2.3.b asks them to know spelling-sound patterns for additional common vowel teams.
- Spelling clue: ai and oa usually come in the middle of a word, while ay and ow usually come at the end (rain, day; boat, snow).
- Heads up: ow can also say /ou/ as in cow, and ea can say short e as in bread. Every word on these sheets uses the long vowel sound.
